Kota Yamaji isn’t scared of anyone or anything. The artist, graphic designer and illustration graduate, he cites both Yayoi Kasuma and Dali as sources of inspiration, while his creations read like love letters to vivid colours. Too much, for Yamaji, is never enough.

His whimsical pop-esque illustrations have drummed up a frenzy of interest on the Internet over recent months, their artistic aura reminiscent of Yumiko Utsu’s photomontages. Yamaji’s multi-platform practice creates a disquieting atmosphere. Under the guise of Kawaii, the depth of his work is at its most intriguing when it is disguised by its simplicity. Welcome to the new era of Cool Japan.
