Artist and brand designer Shun Kawakami was born in Tokyo in 1977. At the end of last year, he won the gold medal for his installation entitled In Praise of Shadows at the Louvre’s Salon des Beaux Arts. He works across numerous domains, such as design, digital arts and scenography.

Kawakami allows himself to explore the commercial side of his work by collaborating on projects with brands via his agency artless Inc. Didn’t Andy Warhol say that being good in business was the best kind of art? Well, Shun follows the same path. Whether it is a sophisticated campaign for Honda, a sooty black installation for the department store Isetan, or the creation of a brochure inspired by wabi-sabi for the Bocuse d’Or, his elegant and polymorphic creations make him a rare breed who aesthetes are desperate to snap up.
