Sendai Mediatheque: Connecting People
Beyond its architectural interest, the building is a centre for exchanging information that has specialised in disaster prevention since March 2011.

Made entirely from glass, the structure of the Sendai Mediatheque is distinguished by a group of marbled wooden pillars through which the visitor moves to the higher floors via elevators. Developed by renowned architect Toyo Ito, it opened in 2001. The grand master of Japanese design drew inspiration from Le Corbusier for his plans.
The concept of the Sendai Mediatheque is to promote the sharing of information thanks to its open spaces. Both a library and an exhibition space, it also houses the ‘Centre of Remembrance 3.11’ in tribute to the natural disaster that affected the region in March 2011. This multimedia studio is used to document the progress of the restoration of the region and to inform the public and future generations of the importance of disaster prevention.
