Driven to inspire relaxation

Nothing feels better than coming home and changing into pajamas or sliding into a bed and muffling oneself in the comfort of blankets. Bedclothes act as a bulwark against daily stressors. YARN HOME, the brainchild of Yumi Arakawa, has a mission to bring those bedclothes and daily products to us to make life a little more enjoyable.

The bed and bath industry isn’t an easy one to crack; it requires working knowledge of production and distribution. However, Arakawa entered the market to produce sheets, blankets, towels, and pajamas as a concept for her brand.

YARN HOME collects high-quality products from vendors throughout Japan, looking specifically for manufacturers that use unique processes and specific materials that many don’t know.

“The idea is to develop designs that are cozy and match modern interiors,” says Arakawa.

Working closely with the vendors allows YARN HOME to order specially produced small batches. It’s becoming a more common technique among small apparel lines.

Arakawa moved to Tokyo from Hiroshima. After studying fashion at Vantan Design Institute, she worked in sales, which later led to a working holiday in England. It was her experience living overseas that inspired YARN HOME.

“I had a homestay at Canterbury in England, which has an old street lined with houses. My host mother arranged the table every morning and changed the sheets once a week. I saw the pleasure of how to take care of daily duties and that is where I started to think about bedclothes and their importance.”

The experience brought back the memories of bedclothes as a child in Hiroshima, where her father ran a bedclothes company. Leveraging her father’s connections, she was able to debut her line that merges Japanese with Western styles in 2016.

Arakawa says, “I focus on color and texture. It is good for baby skin as well. I would like to expand into Western countries and highlight the greatness of Japanese products to the world.”

Denim woven pajamas don’t discolor as others that use indigo dyes, and they’re great for coordinating with sheets and pillow cases.
