Japan Village in Brooklyn Attracts Food Lovers

This covered market offers New Yorkers a space of almost 2000 m2 that's dedicated to Japanese food and cuisine.

Japan Village opened in November 2018 and is home to specialist traders (in sake, tofu or fish and seafood, all imported directly from Japan) and stalls where visitors can taste sushi, okonomiyaki or ramen that’s been prepared right in front of them. All of this is just a stone’s throw from the Hudson River, in the heart of Industry City, a commercial complex that is breathing new life into former factories in the Sunset Park district of Brooklyn.

Japan Village is the brainchild of Tony Yoshida and his children, who previously opened Kyo Ya restaurant (1 Michelin star), now closed, and Sunset Mart, a Japanese grocery that’s well-known to the local residents. But the businessman did not stop there; in 2020, he purchased the second floor of the premises to double the size of Japan Village. The space houses boutiques and a cultural centre that offers courses and events dedicated to Japanese culture.
