Social enterprise has become a buzz phrase in the UK as ethical for-profit businesses proliferate and offer those in need relief. This spring, the Spike & Earl café opened on London’s South Side. Cemal Ezel and Richard Robinson operate this social enterprise café with the goal of supporting the homeless. They hire the homeless to work as waiters and baristas and help them achieve independence. For example, Thomas who makes lattes at the café with ground house roast beans was initially homeless in New York but made his way here. Now he has remembered the preferences of the regular customers and has become a popular barista. This is one café that deserves support.
