SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel, Redefining Urban Stays Through Green Design
A new hotel in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district invites guests to reconnect with the city through plants, craftsmanship, and soothing design.

On September 1, SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel opened its doors in Ningyocho, Nihonbashi, as the lodging facility of SOIL Nihonbashi.
Following SOIL Setoda, which opened in 2021 on Ikuchijima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, this new addition forms part of a dispersed complex designed to coexist with its surroundings. With only 14 rooms, the hotel sits in the midst of a vibrant neighborhood that also houses Parklet Bakery, timsum wine shop, and Soil Work Nihonbashi coworking space—each contributing to the rhythm of everyday life in the area.

A custom-made sofa by design unit staple studio adds a refined accent to the space.

The warm brick tones of the interiors were inspired by the streetscape of Ningyocho.

Some rooms feature cassette players for those who wish to enjoy music in a nostalgic way.
‘Backstreet Gardening’ as a Concept, A Unique Urban Approach
The hotel’s guiding theme is ‘backstreet gardening.’ Inspired by the more than 100 potted plants that line the nearby backstreets—tended and shared among neighbors—it incorporates this urban greenery directly into its design. Plants gifted by local residents are placed throughout the interior, gently softening the atmosphere and creating an oasis of calm in the heart of the city.

Greenery ‘shared’ by local residents peeks out from the balconies.
Inside, the interior design by staple studio reflects a deep attention to material and mood. Custom pieces created especially for this space include planters made from repurposed discarded pots and stone speakers that capture the ‘subtle movements of nature.’ Each detail welcomes guests into a space that feels both thoughtful and alive.

Original Shigaraki ware planters are crafted to feel natural in the hand.

On the ground floor, Pizza Tane, a sourdough pizzeria, opened alongside the hotel. Using natural yeast passed on from the nearby Parklet Bakery, the restaurant serves pizzas topped with generous seasonal ingredients. The combination of the dough’s robust aroma and the rich flavors of fresh vegetables makes for a taste experience found nowhere else.

SOIL Nihonbashi aims to go beyond the conventional idea of a hotel—to blend seamlessly with the neighborhood and its people. It invites guests to become part of the city’s fabric, to feel at home, and to leave as ‘good neighbors.’
