When he made his first visit to Japan, Thibaut Buccellato, a French film director born in 1992, was surprised by the advertisements and screens he found everywhere in Tokyo. When the sun set, the young Frenchman (23 years of age at the time) grabbed his camera and roamed the streets and alleys of Shinjuku and Akihabara, districts where life moves at a rapid pace and where, he says, ‘everything is set to the rhythm of the music that comes out of the speakers in the street and the advertising boards.’

Looking at Thibaut Buccellato’s night-time visions, however, instils in the viewer an almost surreal sense of calm.
