Kobe and Hanshin, Between Port City Modernity and Sake Heritage
Set between sea and mountains, the region blends Western-influenced urban life with one of Japan’s most storied sake-brewing traditions.

As one of Japan’s leading port cities, Kobe was among the first to embrace Western culture. Set between the sea and the mountains, the city forms part of the Kansai region’s three major urban centers alongside Osaka and Kyoto. Here, modern streetscapes coexist with centuries-old sake breweries. With every step, the Kobe–Hanshin area reveals a shifting balance between cosmopolitan energy and traditions shaped by history.
Kobe–Hanshin: Where Japanese and Western Cultures Converge
The journey begins at Shin-Kobe Station, just around 12 minutes by Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka. From here, Kobe unfolds toward the waterfront, where the sea breeze sets the tone for the city. In the former foreign settlement, historic Western-style buildings have been repurposed as boutiques and cafés, quietly preserving the port’s international past.
Climbing the slopes toward the Kitano Ijinkan District, marked by the iconic Weathercock House, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views over the harbor. Despite its fame, the area retains an unhurried atmosphere, offering a sense of calm that feels removed from the crowds.
Stretching east from Kobe toward Osaka lies the Hanshin corridor, an area that cultivated its own lifestyle movement in the early 20th century known as Hanshinkan Modernism. Blending Japanese sensibilities with Western influences, this cultural current shaped architecture, art, and everyday life. From museums and historic residences to the glamorous performances of the Takarazuka Revue, the legacy of this era remains visible today. Tasting world-renowned Kobe beef is another essential experience in this part of the region.

Discovering the Nada Gogō: Japan’s Leading Sake Region
Heading east along the coast from eastern Kobe toward Nishinomiya brings travelers to Nada Gogō, Japan’s most productive sake-brewing area. Located just 5 to 15 kilometers from central Kobe, the region comprises five districts: Nishi-go, Mikage-go, Uozaki-go, Nishinomiya-go, and Imazu-go. White-walled breweries line narrow streets where the names of sake producers active since the Edo period can still be found.
Hyogo’s enduring status as Japan’s leading sake region owes much to Yamada Nishiki, widely regarded as the finest sake rice in the country. Originating in Hyogo, particularly in the Kita-Harima area, Yamada Nishiki is often called the ‘king of sake rice’ for its exceptional quality, carefully selected by brewers in pursuit of the ideal cup.
Given this heritage, brewery visits and sake tastings have become an essential experience for visitors. Sampling freshly brewed sake while learning the distinct character of each kura (sake breweries) offers a quietly luxurious way to engage with the region’s craftsmanship.

After exploring sake culture, another side of Kobe awaits just beyond the city. The deep natural landscapes of the Rokko Mountains rise close to the urban center, offering an easy escape into greenery. Among the highlights is Nunobiki Falls, counted among Japan’s three great waterfalls.
The area encompasses four cascades: Ontaki, Mentaki, Meotodaki, and Tsutsumigadaki. Of these, the uppermost Ontaki, with a drop of 43 meters, is particularly striking. To conclude the day, a visit to the summit of Mount Rokko offers sweeping views over the city. Often described as a ‘ten-million-dollar night view,’ the illuminated cityscape stretches as far as Osaka and Wakayama on clear evenings. Remarkably, this natural retreat is accessible directly from behind Shin-Kobe Station.
Modern urban life, time-honored traditions, and abundant nature come together in the Kobe–Hanshin area. Experiencing all three in a single journey is what gives this region its distinctive appeal.
