In this building with multiple floors, designed to act as housing, interior and exterior spaces mix and blend together. The main intention held by architect Akihisa Hirata, who created Tree-ness House, was to ‘develop a new architectural principle, with the aim of creating a complex ecosystem connected to the city.’

Tree-ness House, located in Otsuka district in eastern Tokyo, is made up of three main elements: boxes that sculpt the structure of the house, staircases and landings that create a link between the inside and outside, and plants and greenery.

Architect Akihisa Hirata, an internationally renowned figure whose work has been exhibited at MoMA, designed this house in response to a request from gallery owner Taka Ishii, who wanted to combine his home with his studio.
