Norihiro Miyairi reworked the codes for crafting traditional Japanese sabres that he learnt from Masamine Sumitani, a legend in this field. After many years spent perfecting his skills, he won the Masamune Prize in 2010, the highest distinction that can be achieved in the profession.

The blacksmith, born in 1954, has been charged with restoring the collections at Shosoin, the national treasure house of the Todaiji temple in Nara that exhibits a large collection of Buddhist statues. Traditionally, the Japanese sabre (katana or nihonto) is considered the ‘soul of the samurai’, although it is now forbidden to be in possession of one without special authorisation. Despite this, 350 blacksmiths in Japan perpetuate its heritage.
