This chain of unusual hotels in Tokyo’s Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Asakusa districts and Fukuoka and Kyoto allows guests to spend the night surrounded by books.
In this paradise for book lovers, the beds are hidden behind shelves filled with over 1700 works in Japanese and English. As Book and Bed explain on their website, ‘There are no comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows nor lightweight and warm down duvets.’ Here, the idea is to lose yourself in a book for a few hours before drifting off.
For the price of a night in a youth hostel, the basic nature of the bedding is made up for by the richness of a night spent among words brought to life. It’s almost tempting to never leave and instead stay sitting comfortably on a sofa, a pile of books by your side.
