Amid an unprecedented sauna boom, diverse facilities such as urban spas and mobile saunas have been emerging across Japan. In April 2024, CYCL, designed by Fukuoka-based architect Yu Momoeda, opened its doors on the shores of Lake Yamanaka in Yamanashi Prefecture, offering breathtaking views of Mount Fuji.

The building’s design draws parallels between Mount Fuji and its clouds, embodying the kasagumo motif through a floating roof. This lightweight roof is supported by a polyhedral structure named ‘The Mountain’, which rises toward the ceiling. The second-floor glass-walled lounge appears suspended within this dynamic design.

Structural supports are placed diagonally within the rectilinear floor plan to create a sense of rhythm in the space. The finishes alternate to represent Mount Fuji’s snow-capped peak. / Photo: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE

Inside, the open structure features exposed wooden beams visible from the first floor. Skylights and vents at the top of the second floor ensure ample natural light and ventilation throughout the building. / Photo: YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE

The first floor houses a Finnish-style sauna offering the authentic löyly experience, a cold plunge bath with natural underground water, and an outdoor relaxation area with uninterrupted views of Mount Fuji. Although most walls are enclosed, the atrium-like open structure above channels natural light and promotes air circulation, connecting the sauna spaces with their natural surroundings. The ever-changing environment can be fully experienced with all five senses.

After a sauna session, the transition to the second-floor lounge is breathtaking. The column-free space offers unobstructed panoramic views of Mount Fuji and Lake Yamanaka, where guests can unwind while seated on the floor. Nearby, outdoor spots like campsites add to the area’s appeal. CYCL offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in nature, freeing the mind and body.
