Hayao Miyazaki, the uncontested master of Japanese animation behind the mythical Studio Ghibli, is the focus of a new four-part documentary available online via the Japanese channel NHK.
The director Kaku Arakawa was able to shadow Miyazaki over the course of a decade, a prolific period during which the animator produced Ponyo on the Cliff, From Up on Poppy Hill as well as The Wind Rises. Entitled 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki the documentary reveals the creative process of each of the films, immersing the viewer in the aesthetic of animation, accurately capturing the abundant inspirations that the indefatigable Miyazaki engages with; the artist has made many retirement announcements, but is yet to actually step down.
The documentary also gives spectators an insight into the personality of the animation genius, following his personal life, until now, highly guarded, and documenting the special relationship that Miyazaki has with his son Goro.
10 Years With Hayao Miyazaki paints an intimate portrait of the Japanese artist over one segment of his life, punctuated with discussions, discoveries and doubts. A real visual gem, this documentary provides fans with something to tide them over while waiting for Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka (How Do You Live?), due for release in 2020.
