Director Mamoru Hosada’s  animated film Mirai was released in Europe in December 2018. Kun, a jolly little boy, suddenly finds himself bereft at the arrival of his younger sister in the family home.

Learning to grow up

Jealous of the attention that Mirai receives, he struggles to find his place in the house and takes to hiding away at the bottom of the garden under a magical tree that transports him to a fantastical world where the past converges with the future. He gets to know different members of his family at different ages and time periods. These exciting encounters shape Kun and help him grow up slowly but surely.

Through these touching scenes of real life and moments of immersion in a parallel universe, the filmmaker has constructed a narrative that evokes the unwavering, if sometimes fragile, link between sibling relations.
