For his pieces, designer James Kaoru Bury takes inspiration from traditional Japanese paper lanterns (known as chouchin), created in the 16th century and initially designed for outside use. The candle is grooved and has a thick wick in the centre. A light and shadow effect that recalls that of paper lanterns begins when the wick burns deeper inside, leaving the contours of the object to become a light source where the flame dances.

The brains behind this creation, Japanese designer James Kaoru Bury, was born in Osaka and trained in product design at Tama Art University. With this candle, he has one foot in the past while looking to the future.
