Taste Tea in All Its Forms in a Tokyo Restaurant
1899 Ochanomizu offers somewhat surprising dishes based around matcha, like octopus marinated in green tea.

Located in the Ochanomizu district (meaning ‘tea water’) in Tokyo, Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu is the only establishment that studies the flavour and finesse of tea in fine detail.
Omelette and green sausages
The restaurant’s surprising but nonetheless appetising menu celebrates the ingredient with thirteen different dishes, including a green tea omelette roll with matcha potato salad, octopus marinated in green tea, and a variety of green sausages with matcha fries and roasted tea, all naturally accompanied by a green tea or, more unexpectedly, a matcha beer or matcha wine. This unique restaurant, opened in 2014, offers refined cuisine that manages to incorporate tea into dishes without hiding or overshadowing the other flavours present, such as umami.
The decor is equally pleasing: the interior is soothing, with a green colour that suits this Japanese nouvelle cuisine enhanced by green tea perfectly.
More information about 1899 Ochanomizu can be found on the restaurant’s website.
