Niseko, a Traditional French-Style Bistro
This bar and restaurant in Hokkaido marries recipes from France with local ingredients to create dishes with surprising flavours.

A taste of France on the Japanese island of Hokkaido is what is on offer at The Barn, a French alpine fusion restaurant that opened in Niseko in 2010. Housed in a typically Japanese barn updated with contemporary touches to make the space lighter, both Japanese visitors and tourists can discover a warm ambiance that evokes that of a French-style bistro and feel as if they’ve taken a trip overseas for the evening.
Foie gras sushi and sake marinated mussels
On the upper floor, the bar offers light snacks accompanied by mulled wine in the winter and refreshing cocktails in the summer. For dinner, the ground-floor restaurant serves unpretentious cuisine. The chefs expertly juggle local ingredients from Hokkaido with quality French ingredients, producing an exquisite mix.
Just a glance at the menu is sure to whet the appetite. Diners have a tricky choice between foie gras sushi, Niseko sake marinated mussels, or perhaps a wagyu beef gratin to complete this high-quality experience of French cuisine in the heart of Japan.
More information about The Barn can be found on the restaurant’s website.
